0.5 JAPANESE

Inspired by a mash-up of traditional Japanese materials, Japanese minimalism and industrial details, Vacuum Studio created this modern edgy izakaya - the perfect solution for “0.5” sushi bar and restaurant.

Traditional Japanese Masu cups were used as a decorative feature for the bar.  These are small square wooden boxes originally used to measure rice portions in Japan during the feudal period.   However, now it is commonplace for the sake glass to be served in a Masu cup and sake is overflowed into and drunk directly from it.

Rows of straw ropes commonly used in Japanese festivals adds drama to the open ceiling.  Paired with the natural wood design elements, these offer the perfect balance of warmth against the raw concrete wall and floor and rose gold stainless steel details.

A mural of an imaginary old Japanese village was created by the talented Canadian artist Peter Yuill and a play of the number “5” was intertwined in the artwork.  If one looks carefully, you will see “5” embedded in the shop names and 5 vibrant birds in full flight representing the 5 energetic and dynamic young owners.

The ultimate objective of the design was to create an edgy casual space, that is comfortable, fun and vibrant, soaked in an energetic urban atmosphere.  After all, the Japanese word izakaya (居酒屋) literally meaning  “reside-alcohol-house” translates as a place to grab a drink, settle in, and stay for the duration.
